We are very happy to announce that our web hosting provider purchased several Silicon Graphics Origin 200 servers. SGI, known for their scientific visualization and rendering workstations, are now contenders with Sun Microsystems and IBM Mainframes. These represent a vast consolidation of resources with the latest in speed/performance optimization. Origin servers are sleek and rounded-off purple-blue cases that have a distinctly alien feel to them.

Each Origin 200 carres a whopping 256MB of RAM, with proscessor instructions filtered through dual 180 MHZ RISC(R10000) CPU's. The systems run a powerful SGI flavor of the UNIX Operating System, IRIX V6.4.

These new servers clock in at approximately 8x faster than our former servers. Naturaly, because of the impressive benchmarks, our provider's intent is to migrate all web sites to these new servers. Transplanting groups of sites from server to server has the nice side effect of defragmenting all files.

Faster servers are in general, to the benefit of web developers. To observe the speedup through a modem line is elusive, because of the bottlenecking of bandwidth added by your modem line (most likely the least powerful link.)
