Notes From You

You have achieved greatness as a leader when people will follow you anywhere, if only out of curiosity.
~Colin L. Powell

This week has been a mess of wires and software here at Qru Studios. We have completed the reshuffling of our hardware to accommodate all of our new machines and have installed some exciting new server software on two of our servers. Tate Madler, our Creative Director, has single handedly accomplished feats in networking topology that some of the largest companies have trouble solving. Now everything is running smoothly and we have transcended the information age of technology and are well on our way into the space age. Follow!

Servers and Services
After three days of diligent testing, Microsoft's Windows NT Server 4.0 is now running our LAN. The server version of this software gives administrators a greater level of control and endless possibilities. With strong administrative skills and a well organized systems we have been able to add abundant resources and capabilities. Previously our LAN fell under the heading of QRU using standard networking but now is at Domain level now called the STUDIO enabling us to provide secure Intranet access far sooner than previously expected. Donations of software titles including Visual Interdev, which includes Microsoft Java, Visual C++, and Visual Basic as well as database drivers for SQL, ODBC, and Access, in addition to access level control, leaving rollout on things like custom servers and kiosks a moment away (in evolutionary terms anyway). Now is a good time to invest in a website or server of your own.

Featuring...

The Return of Osiris
Osiris of the KnowMadz was in for a brief visit to the Chicago area from New York this weekend. He was here to check out the local Goth scene at a three day convention for the Project record label at The Vic Theatre in Chicago with an independent author/zine covering the events. Several shows were scheduled in the agenda and our Chieftain took up an invitation for a Saturday night show. Recently, Osiris has departed his work with IBM and is looking for something a little more relaxing to spend his time on. We will be hearing more from him soon to be sure.

On the LAN
Hydra
Many thanks to all of you who entered the name game for our ever expanding LAN. After a final round of selection, the staff at Qru has chosen Hydra (the multi-headed serpent of Greek mythology and protagonist in the trials of Hercules) as the name of our new machine responsible for media development. We found this name most appropriate as it reflects the many tasks this input/output machine will perform in the vast arena of multimedia production. We hope it will raise multitasking to an artform, working as if it possessed the nine heads of its namesake. With all of the hardware in place and minor interface left to complete this mythical monster, this machine is optimized for the task at hand and soon to have all of its functions up and roaring.

Beastly Problems
The Beast has gone into remission after near fatal incompatibility complications that arose this week during a round of upgrading. The resources of the Beast were reallocated to Beauty and the Obelisk to maintain optimal performance. Meanwhile we are redistributing funds to procure necessary equipment for the Beast to undergo needed upgrading. We hope to see the Beast back up and running stronger and fiercer than ever before in the near future. Your support for the Beast of the future is strongly encouraged as you know it will only allow us to serve you better, sooner.

Free BSD
Qru Studios has procured Free BSD, a dual platform UNIX operating system, for installation and use on Obelisk, our soon to be distant server. BSD supports both LINUX and the AT&T standards, giving us the most flexibility with software. Tate Madler, our Creative Director, has previous experience with LINUX, a shareware version of UNIX, and hopes to have BSD running smoothly shortly. We will keep you posted as our adventures lead us further into the land of UNIX.

On the See

The Week the Internet (Almost) Went Down
Our resourceful friends at Hardcorp have found a top secret document giving a detailed report of serious performance hits to the Internet that happened over the course of one short week. Over 1500 gigabits per second were being lost in the United States alone. Brownouts and blackouts on the Internet were common symptoms of the problem. Both east and west coast services were interrupted. We were caught in the maelstrom here in Chicago too of course. On the bright side, the problems have since been rectified and most of the lost bandwidth has been restored. PSI, an Internet Service Provider, will be supplying over a gigabit per second of bandwidth and thousands of miles cable to the web. In the future you can expect some faster speeds and connections. Hang in there, it's only beginning to get better folks!

Client Side
Web TV
After a period of preparation for both parties, negotiations with Web TV are continuing. The intricacies of third party authentication and integration have been worked out and things are rolling along smoothly for WebSlides. This on-line point of sales website will help hundreds of Web TV sales representatives show their product and it's potentials within minutes of entering any environment with a television and a telephone line.

Fiduciary HR
Fiduciary Trust Company's Human Resources on-line database is undergoing optimization and review to further meet the needs of their department. The script is being revamped to heighten the overall performance and output. New additions will help Fiduciary stay ahead of the market as their needs change and grow.

Notes From You
Glad to hear work is going well. Will check out your site (I always enjoyed your creative web designs and coding).
