Introduction

Recent advances in the use of technology in the arts have created the field of Computer Art. The development of graphical user interfaces and full color printers have allowed artists to produce professional quality work on personal computers. New disciplines, such as multimedia and interactivity have also evolved. Interactivity allows the user to communicated with the computer in a non-linear manner to gain and to access all kinds of information from text, to images, and video.

Multimedia is currently used for kiosks centers at large events and point of purchase displays. In addition to to these new fields computers are being used in traditional disciplines such as design, photography, video, animation and fine arts. The integration of all of these elements requires a new approach to the education of an artist who would create for this new medium.

The education of computer artists requires a broad multidisciplinary approach. Not only does a computer artist need technical skills but they must have creative skills as well. They must be technically proficient with software and hardware currently being used in the art community and must also possess an understanding of the machine on its own fundamental level. A skilled computer artist should be able to write software and do their own programming. furthermore, basic skills in a variety of traditional art fields.
